The playground renovation and James G. Blaine Elementary School began in April 2023, as part of a larger program of outdoor space renovations that Cordos completed during that summer. The project included demolishing the existing playground, new site development and paving, and newly furnished playground equipment. The construction program was to complete multiple playground renovations at select Chicago Public Schools in time for commencement in Fall. Cordos’ team for this project included 30% Minority-Owned Business Enterprise and 13.5% Woman-Owned Business Enterprise participation.
Logistics issues, such as managing equipment and materials staging on a small site, were managed by Cordos’ onsite superintendent. Other latent conditions arose, including an undocumented below grade obstructions including a decommissioned electrical duct bank and an old foundation. Scope was added when underground construction activities revealed that a roof drain was disconnected from the existing storm system. Despite these challenges, Cordos completed the project on time and within budget.
In October of 2023, the project was completed, and the playground was opened for student and neighborhood use. The finished product includes a modern playground with a rubberized asphalt surface, accessible paving and ramps, a sensory panel, and other accessible elements for exploration and learning.
