HOLY NATIVITY ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Located on North Mozart Street in Chicago, this unusual design combines a traditional basilica design with rich exterior masonry decoration, including two-color brick banding and extensive cut limestone trim.

CORDOS was tasked with constructing the shell and core, including demolition, mat foundations, structural steel framing, perimeter load bearing masonry walls, windows, and roofing. The congregation will complete the interiors, which will include richly detailed mosaics throughout installed by local congregation artisans.

The church features a large crossing dome and two front cupola domes; each was designed with compound curves and intersecting curved eyebrows. CORDOS collaborated with RadiusTrack over a three month period to design the domes out of cold-rolled steel C-joists, which were delivered to the site for field assembly by CORDOS carpenters. After assembly the three domes were clad on the ground with standing seam metal roofing and then craned to their respective locations for final securement.
